Self-Harming Behaviors

Some people use self-harm as a way to cope with overwhelming emotions or numbness. This is a sign that support is needed, not a personal failure.

What may contribute:

• Difficulty coping with intense emotions
• Trauma or emotional distress
• Feelings of numbness or lack of control
• Co-occurring anxiety or mood disorders

Common symptoms:

• Repetitive behaviors used to manage emotional pain
• Difficulty expressing emotions
• Feelings of isolation or distress
