Back-to-School Can Be Exciting... and Stressful

A new school year often brings fresh notebooks, new teachers, and a fresh start.
For many students, it also brings nerves.
Starting a new school, moving to a different grade, or adjusting to unfamiliar classmates can feel overwhelming, even for children who normally enjoy school.
A little nervousness is completely normal. The goal isn't to eliminate those feelings—it's to help students feel supported while they adjust.

Every Child Adjusts Differently
Some children jump right into a new environment.
Others need more time.
You might notice your child asking more questions, becoming quieter than usual, struggling to sleep, or saying they don't want to go to school. Younger children may complain of stomachaches or headaches even when they're physically healthy.
These are common ways anxiety can show up during a big transition.
Small Things Make a Big Difference
Parents don't have to solve every worry.
Sometimes the most helpful thing is simply listening.
Ask how your child is feeling. Let them talk about what's exciting and what's making them nervous.
If possible, visit the school before the first day. Walk the hallways, find the classroom, or spend a few minutes exploring the building together. Familiar places often feel much less intimidating.
Creating consistent bedtime and morning routines before school starts can also make those first few weeks feel much smoother.
When School Anxiety Doesn't Go Away
Most students settle into their new routine after a few weeks.
But sometimes anxiety continues long after school has started.
If your child is constantly worried, withdrawing from friends, struggling academically, or becoming increasingly emotional, it may be a sign they need additional support.
There's nothing unusual about needing help during a major life transition.
Helping Students Feel More Confident
Therapy can give children and teens practical tools to manage anxiety, build confidence, strengthen social skills, and adjust to new situations at their own pace.
At JBC Clinic, we support students and families throughout every stage of the school year. Whether your child is starting kindergarten, transitioning to middle school, beginning high school, or moving to a brand-new school, our team is here to help make that transition a little easier.
Every new beginning comes with an adjustment period.
With the right support, students can build confidence, develop resilience, and start the school year feeling ready for what's ahead.
